ICEBREAKERS

Make sure to start off with prayer. Then choose one or more questions to open up with.

How old were you when you started working, and what was your first job?

TALK-IT-OUT

Go through each main point and scripture from the message and use the corresponding questions in discussion with your group. Encourage your group to pull this post up on their own device to follow along.

Talk-it-out: What does it mean to show respect and be respected.

1 Peter 2:17 (NIV)
Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor. (the government)

Proverbs 22:1 (NCV)
Being respected is more important than having great riches. To be well thought of is better than silver or gold.

Point 1: RESPECT YOURSELF.

I Samuel 9:21 (NKJV)
Saul answered and said, “Am I not a Benjamite, of the smallest of the tribes of Israel, and my family the least of all the families of the tribe of Benjamin? Why then do you speak like this to me?"

1 Samuel 17:36–37 (ESV)
David replying to King Saul, “Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear, this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them . . . The Lord who delivered me . . . will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.”

Psalm 139:14 (ESV)
I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.

Talk-it-Out: What is the difference between being confident because of Christ and being over confident in your own abilities?

Talk-it-Out: Are there any areas that you need to grow in confidence/or respect for yourself that are hindering the flow of respect?

POINT 2: RESPECT YOURSELF, SO YOU CAN RESPECT OTHERS

Scripture Context: While running from the current jealous King (Saul) David had many oportunities to take his life, but chose to respect his position and authority.

Talk-it-Out: How do you think David found the strength to go against the "natural" current and show King Saul this level of respect?

Talk-it-Out: Can you think of a time when you had to trust what God had told you even when it seemed like a person or people were "holding you back" or "preventing progress" in your life?

Learn the Language of Respect

1: Honor Up, down, all around—Honor considers everyone. Honor gives the benefit of the doubt.

2: Admiration, appreciation—Given in a variety of amounts to a variety of people who earn it.

3: Trust—Given in a variety of amounts to select people who earn it.

It’s time for some of us to have an epiphany: There’s a lot of people around me that are worthy of respect that I’m not respecting.

Talk-it-Out: Is there anyone you are needing to give grace to and treat with more honor just because they are a living, breathing human that God created?

POINT 3: RESPECT YOURSELF SO YOU CAN RESPECT OTHERS AND OTHERS CAN RESPECT YOU.

1 Samuel 24

David speaking: v10 ‘I will not put out my hand against my lord, for he is the Lord's anointed.’

Saul responding: v17-19 “You are more righteous than I, for you have repaid me good, whereas I have repaid you evil.  And you have declared this day how you have dealt well with me, in that you did not kill me when the Lord put me into your hands. 1 For if a man finds his enemy, will he let him go away safe? So may the Lord reward you with good for what you have done to me this day.

Talk-it-Out: What does it look like and sound like for others to respect you?

1 Chronicles 10:13 (NIV)
Saul died because he was unfaithful to the Lord, he did not keep the word of the Lord.

Talk-it-Out: If Saul was confident in the Lord and in his position would he have needed to demand respect?

1 Samuel 18:7 (NIV)
As they danced, they sang: “Saul has slain his thousands, and David his tens of thousands.”

1 Chronicles 11:1–3
All Israel came together to David at Hebron . . . “In the past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel on their military campaigns . . . and they anointed David king over Israel.”

Talk-it-Out: What is it about King David that people are attracted to and why does he draw followers even in while running and hiding in a cave?
